Emily Elizabeth Umile facilitates student learning in subject matters including Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics at Fusion Academy. She earned a Bachelor’s degree of Science from Manhattan College, where she participated in various research opportunities in cognitive behavior and clinical psychology. Emily also earned a Master’s degree of Science in Secondary Education Biology, where she graduated with academic honors. Emily also earned her NYS Initial Teaching Certificate for Biology. In addition to being certified in teaching Biology, Emily is also currently in the process of becoming NYS certified in Chemistry to further develop her professional interdisciplinary of science. In the past year, Emily had been placed as a student teacher at both the Bayport-Blue Point and Patchogue-Medford School districts where she had successfully demonstrated a mastery of her subject area. Currently Emily spends her days teaching with Syosset School District and her afternoons teaching at Fusion Academy. Emily’s instructional disposition has been targeted and differentiated, which is why she has been transparent and successful in conveying knowledge such as Life Science and Living Environment while implementing the Next Generation Science Standards. Emily also has experience working at Stony Brook Cancer Center. She coordinated and attended the Physician and Resident Tumor boards, where patient’s pathology and cases were discussed to help pinpoint the best course of action. Emily also met with patients and families to efficiently coordinate their health care plans.
During Emily’s free time, she enjoys to teach and practice yoga. She is certified as a Vinyasa and Hot Yoga Teacher with Yoga Alliance, teaching at various yoga studios and gyms in Suffolk County. The values she learned from yoga, such as how to set goals, importance of community, maintaining a regimented practice and to always value yourself, are values that she hopes to instill in her students as an educator.
On a more personal note, Emily has a great passion for science and teaching. She believes there is no greater gift than to help motivate and develop young minds. She is thankful of her experiences which has given her the opportunity to shape young minds in a more formal educational setting and is hopeful that she will be successful in sharing with her Fusion Academy community a passion for science and helping students become lifelong learners.
